Project Overview
This 6,500 sq ft residence, set on a 2,400 sq ft plot, is conceived as a four bedroom tropical contemporary home that explores volumetric articulation within a constrained footprint. Completed in 2021, the design focuses on creating a strong architectural identity through the interplay of built mass and void, while responding to climatic and spatial considerations.
Design Concept
The core strategy revolves around carving and projecting volumes to generate depth, lightness, and visual dynamism. Balconies and voids are not treated as secondary elements but as integral components that shape the built form. These interventions break down the perceived scale of the structure, introducing layers and movement across the facade.
The eastern edge of the house is activated through a series of balconies that invite light and openness into the interiors. In contrast, the southern facade is intentionally kept more solid, reducing heat gain and establishing a sense of visual grounding. This calibrated response balances environmental performance with architectural expression.
Architectural Expression
A defining feature of the residence is the cantilevered “floating cube,” which projects 14 feet from the main structure. This bold intervention becomes the visual anchor of the design, creating a striking sense of suspension and defying conventional massing. The element not only enhances the identity of the house but also reinforces the concept of controlled imbalance and spatial tension.
The interplay between solid planes and recessed voids further accentuates this effect, producing a composition that shifts in perception depending on the viewing angle. The layering of volumes generates shaded pockets and transitional spaces, enriching both the exterior experience and interior quality.
Spatial Quality
Internally, the articulation of masses translates into varied spatial experiences, with openings and projections framing views, admitting natural light, and enabling cross ventilation. The integration of balconies and voids ensures that the interiors remain connected to the outdoors while maintaining privacy and climatic comfort.
Design Approach
The project demonstrates a focused exploration of form, proportion, and climate responsiveness. Through a deliberate manipulation of massing elements, the design achieves a balance between bold architectural gestures and functional performance. The result is a residence defined by clarity of concept, spatial depth, and a distinct visual presence.
